What it is
Installs Microsoft’s genuine Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Most corporate documents and coursework are in these formats, and compatibility is the main reason people pay for it. Installing is free; actually using it requires a Microsoft 365 subscription or a licence key.
When to pick this
If you handle complex Excel formatting or macros for work or study. For reading and light edits, ONLYOFFICE or LibreOffice cost nothing.

Installing and licensing are separate
It installs, but editing unlocks only after you sign in and a licence is found. Otherwise it is read-only.
Which build installs
The enterprise build (Microsoft 365 Apps). With a home licence key, downloading from your Microsoft account page is the safer route.
The free route
The web version at office.com is free with an account. It does less, but opening a document and making small edits works.
After a reformat
Reinstall from your account
At account.microsoft.com → Services & subscriptions, click Install and it comes down with the licence attached. No product key to re-enter. Office that came with the PC is on whichever account you set it up with.
What does not come back
Your Normal.dotm template, AutoCorrect entries, ribbon customisations and Outlook signatures live only on the PC. Copy the Templates and Signatures folders under %APPDATA%\Microsoft before formatting.
Outlook mail
Modern accounts (Microsoft 365, IMAP) come down from the server once reconnected. Mail fetched by POP3 or kept in a PST file needs that file backed up.
