What it is
An open-source office suite from The Document Foundation. It opens, edits and saves Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx) and PowerPoint (.pptx) files, and is free for personal and business use alike. It is the most widely used alternative where buying Microsoft Office is not an option.
When to pick this
If you mainly read documents and make light edits. For complex Excel macros or precise layout work, you still need MS Office.
Details
MS Office compatibility
Opens and saves docx, xlsx and pptx. Complex formatting and macros may shift, so check important documents before sending them on.
PDF export
Any document can be saved as PDF without a separate program.
Business use
No licence cost even when installed across a company. If your internal templates are built for MS Office, test compatibility first.
After a reformat
The user profile folder is everything
Custom dictionaries, AutoCorrect, macros and toolbar layout are in %APPDATA%\LibreOffice\4\user. Copy that folder before formatting and the whole configuration returns.
File associations
Setup asks whether to associate DOC, XLS, PPT and other Office formats with LibreOffice. If you also use Microsoft Office, better not to.
