What it is
Adobe’s PDF reader. Adobe created the PDF format itself, so documents that break in other viewers often render correctly here. Reading, annotating and signing are free; editing and conversion require a paid subscription.
When to pick this
For documents where layout fidelity matters, such as bank or government forms. For plain viewing, the reader already in Chrome or Edge is enough; for editing, look at ALPDF or a paid product.
Details
What is free
Opening, printing, highlighting, comments and electronic signatures. Signing a contract and sending it back costs nothing.
What is paid
Editing text inside a document, or converting a PDF to Word or Excel. The buttons appear in the free version but lead to a purchase prompt.
Installer checkboxes
Setup may offer other Adobe products or a browser extension. Clear what you do not want.
After a reformat
Untick the extra offers on the download page
Next to the download button, something like McAfee is pre-ticked. This site’s installer uses the distribution file that carries no such offers.
Adobe account is optional
Reading and annotating need no sign-in. If you used signatures or cloud documents, signing in brings them back.
Default PDF app
After install it asks to become the default viewer. Change it any time under Settings → Apps → Default apps.
