What it is
An open-source media player from the VideoLAN project. It carries its own codecs, so it plays almost any video or audio file without installing a codec pack. There are no ads and no bundled software, and it is free for personal and commercial use alike.
When to pick this
If you want one player that opens everything with no ads. For automatic subtitle lookup, GOM Player; for fine-grained playback settings, PotPlayer.
Details
Plays almost anything
mkv, avi, mp4, wmv, flv and more open without extra codecs. It also plays damaged files that other players refuse.
No ads, no bundles
The installer contains only the player. Nothing to uncheck, and nothing appears later.
Also plays discs and streams
DVDs, network streams and audio CDs play in the same window.
After a reformat
Install and you are done
Codecs are built in and settings rarely need touching. Just pick file associations during setup.
