What it is
A free video player from Kakao, made by the developer who originally created KMPlayer. It is light on resources, uses hardware acceleration well, and exposes an unusually deep set of playback options. It is popular in Korea and free for personal and business use.
When to pick this
If you want a light player with detailed control on Windows. If you need the same player on Mac or Linux, use VLC.
Details
Hardware acceleration
Offloads decoding to the GPU, so high-resolution video plays smoothly with low CPU use.
Playback options
Subtitle timing, playback speed, audio sync, aspect ratio and colour can all be adjusted in detail. Some find the number of settings excessive.
Windows only
There is no Mac or Linux version. If you switch machines, VLC travels with you.
After a reformat
Export the settings
The bottom of the Preferences window has export and import. If you changed hotkeys, subtitle fonts or playback options, export before formatting. Codecs are built in; nothing else to install.
Extra items in the installer
Setup sometimes shows adverts or offers for other programs, pre-ticked. Untick and continue.
File associations
Setup asks which video and audio formats to open with PotPlayer. If you never use Windows Media Player, associate them all.
