What it is

Compares two files or two folders side by side. It colours which lines changed and which files exist on only one side, and you can reconcile the differences right there in the comparison. Open source and free for personal and business use.

When to pick this

When config files or documents have diverged and you need to see what differs. If you are already working in code, VS Code has a similar comparison built in.

Details

Files and folders

Line-by-line differences in text files, and folder comparisons showing what is missing or extra. Used for checking a backup against the original.

Copying changes across

Arrows move a difference from one side to the other, which makes merging two diverged config files straightforward.

Character encodings

It recognises UTF-8, EUC-KR, Shift_JIS and others, so files in different encodings compare without garbling.
