What it is

A terminal from Microsoft that replaces the old Command Prompt window. It adds tabs, split panes, font and colour settings, and proper Unicode rendering. Command Prompt, PowerShell and WSL Linux shells can each sit in a tab of the same window.

When to pick this

If you work at the command line often or plan to use terminal tools like Claude Code or Codex. On Windows 11 it is already there.

Tabs and splits

Use tabs instead of separate windows, and split a pane left/right or top/bottom to watch two shells at once.

Fonts and Unicode

Emoji and CJK fonts that broke in the old Command Prompt render correctly. Background colour and transparency are adjustable.

Already on Windows 11

It ships with Windows 11. On Windows 10 you install it separately.
