What it is
A Chromium-based browser from Vivaldi Technologies, built by people who previously worked on Opera. What separates it is how much you can change: layout, keyboard shortcuts and mouse gestures are nearly all configurable. Vertical tabs and two tabs side by side are settings, not extensions.
When to pick this
If you keep many tabs open and want the browser shaped to your habits. If you never touch settings, Chrome or Edge fit better.
Details
Rearrangeable layout
Move the tab bar, address bar and panels wherever you want. Past a few dozen tabs, vertical tabs are far easier to work with.
Tab stacking and tiling
Group related tabs into one and tile two tabs side by side within a single window.
Built-in tools
Notes, mail, calendar and ad blocking are included — which also makes the first screen busier than most browsers.
After a reformat
A Vivaldi account brings it back
Bookmarks, passwords, notes and open tabs sync, and so do layout, theme and keyboard shortcut settings. Most of Vivaldi’s configuration travels with the account.
Mail, calendar and feeds
If you used the built-in mail client, reconnect the accounts. IMAP mail comes down from the server; mail that lived only locally is gone without a profile folder backup.
