Check before installing
- Going through several relays makes it much slower than a normal browser. It will not replace your everyday one.
- Signing in or installing extensions defeats the anonymity. Use it as it comes.
What it is
A Firefox-based browser from the Tor Project. Traffic passes through three volunteer-run relays, so neither the site you visit nor the network in between can easily tell who you are. It was built for journalists and activists working around censorship.
When to pick this
Only for the specific situations where your traffic must not be traceable. For ad and tracker blocking, Brave or Firefox are far more practical.
Details
Relayed routing
Each request goes through three relays, and each relay knows only the step before and after. No single point sees both who you are and where you went.
It is slow
Three hops make it far slower than a normal browser. It is not a replacement for everyday browsing or video.
What breaks anonymity
Signing in, installing extensions or resizing the window all create identifying signals. Using it as it comes is the point.
