What it is
Microsoft’s Chromium-based browser, already installed on Windows 10 and 11. Because it shares the Chromium engine with Chrome, it runs the same extensions, and it tends to use less memory in Microsoft’s own measurements thanks to sleeping tabs. There is nothing to install after a reformat — it is there from the first boot.
When to pick this
If you want a browser that just works with nothing to install, or if memory is tight. If you want your existing Chrome sync data, install Chrome.
Details
Sleeping tabs
Tabs you have not touched for a while release their memory and wake when you return. It shows on machines with limited RAM.
Chrome extensions
You can install directly from the Chrome Web Store; nearly everything works.
Already installed
It ships with Windows, so you only reinstall it if you removed it deliberately.
After a reformat
No reinstall needed
It is part of Windows. Sign in with a Microsoft account and bookmarks, passwords and extensions return. Windows Update keeps it current.
If you use a different browser
Edge cannot be removed, but you only need to change the default. Settings → Apps → Default apps, pick your browser.
