What it is

An open-source browser from the Mozilla Foundation. It is effectively the only major browser not built on Chromium — it uses its own Gecko engine — and tracking protection is on by default. Many people choose it specifically to keep an alternative engine alive while Chromium dominates the market.

When to pick this

If privacy matters to you or you want to avoid a Chromium-only web. If you depend on a Chrome extension that has no Firefox version, check that first.

Details

Enhanced tracking protection

Ad trackers, social trackers and cookie-based tracking are blocked out of the box, with no extension required.

Container tabs

Cookies are isolated per tab, so you can be signed in to the same site with several accounts at once — handy for separating work and personal accounts.

Independent engine

Sites built only against Chromium occasionally render differently. It is rare now, but it does happen.

After a reformat

A Firefox account brings it back

Bookmarks, history, saved passwords, extensions and open tabs return through Sync. Just sign in.

What does not come back

Values changed in about:config and customisations such as userChrome.css live only in the profile folder (%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles). Copy that folder before formatting and you can restore the lot.
