What it is
An open-source email client from Mozilla. It collects accounts from different providers into one window and downloads mail to your PC, so past messages stay readable offline. It comes from the makers of Firefox and is free for personal and business use.
When to pick this
If you have several mail accounts or want mail kept on your own machine. With a single webmail account there is little reason to install it.

No moving between websites per account. Particularly convenient when you juggle work and personal mail.
Stored on your PC
Mail is downloaded locally, so it reads offline — which also means you must back up the profile folder before reformatting.
Calendar included
A calendar ships with it, so mail and schedule live in the same program.
After a reformat
The profile folder is everything — before formatting
Account settings, mail, address book, filters and calendar live in a folder under %APPDATA%\Thunderbird\Profiles. Copy the whole folder before formatting, put it back in the same place after the new install, and it opens as it was.
Without a backup
IMAP accounts bring mail down from the server once reconnected. Mail fetched by POP3 or moved to Local Folders does not come back without the profile.
