What it is
The Windows version of Telegram’s messenger. Conversations are stored on the server, so any device shows the full history, and once you have signed in on a PC it keeps working without the phone. The client is GPL v3 open source, so the code can be inspected.
When to pick this
For the same history across devices or for sending large files. It will not replace KakaoTalk for contacts in Korea, who are almost all there already.
Details
Cross-device sync
Phone, PC and tablet all show the same history. There is no requirement to keep the phone switched on, unlike KakaoTalk’s desktop client.
File size limit
Up to 2GB per file, including on free accounts — easier than email for large transfers.
Secret chats
Normal chats are stored on the server; end-to-end encryption applies only in separately started secret chats. Worth knowing the difference before relying on it.
After a reformat
Sign in with phone verification
Enter your number and a code arrives in Telegram on your phone. Chats are all on the server and come back as they were.
Received files
Downloaded files can be fetched again, but anything deleted from the chat cannot. Move what you need out of the download folder first.
