What it is
The desktop client for KakaoTalk, the messenger used by the overwhelming majority of people in Korea. It mirrors the conversations on your phone, so you can type on a keyboard and move files between phone and PC without a cable. For anyone living in or dealing with Korea, this is usually a non-negotiable install.
When to pick this
Install it if you talk to anyone in Korea. For work conversations that need to stay searchable, Slack fits better; for voice-first communities, Discord does.

Phone-linked login
You sign in on the PC by confirming on the phone. Chat history syncs from the moment you connect; older messages stay on the phone.
Sending files to yourself
The chat with yourself works as a scratch space for moving files between phone and PC. It is the fastest cable-free transfer most people use.
Startup behaviour
It adds itself to Windows startup by default. If your boot feels slow after a reformat, this is one of the first things to check.
After a reformat
PC verification again
On sign-in a verification code is sent to KakaoTalk on your phone. The reformatted PC counts as a new device, so this happens once.
Chat history does not come back
Conversations on the PC are not kept on the server. Unless you exported each room with "Save chat" before formatting, they are gone. Chats on your phone are unaffected.
Received files
Downloaded photos and files exist only in a PC folder. Move the ones you need before formatting; anything still on the server can be re-downloaded within the retention period.
