What it is
A collection of Windows utilities from Microsoft, bundled into one program: window layouts, batch file renaming, colour picking and text extraction among others. It is open source and free for personal and business use.
When to pick this
If you arrange windows constantly or do a lot of file housekeeping.
Details
FancyZones
Define a layout for the screen and dropped windows snap into place. The gain is large on wide or dual monitors.
PowerRename
Rename many files at once by rule, with regular expression support — commonly used for tidying photo files.
Text extraction
Select text visible on screen and copy it — useful for documents that block copying, or text inside an image.
After a reformat
Settings backup is built in
General → Backup & restore saves the settings to a file: FancyZones layouts, Keyboard Manager mappings and PowerToys Run plugin settings included. Save before formatting and restore on the new install.
Choose which modules to enable
After install every module is on by default. Turning off the ones you do not use avoids shortcut conflicts.
