- Models are downloaded separately from the program. Small ones are 2–5GB and large ones tens of GB — check your free disk space.
- It runs without a dedicated GPU but slowly. 8GB or more of video memory makes it practical.
What it is
Runs AI models directly on your own PC. One command downloads a model and runs it, and nothing you type leaves the machine. It is MIT-licensed open source, free for individuals and companies alike.
When to pick this
To use AI without sending anything outside, or to experiment without a subscription. If you would rather click than type commands, LM Studio does the same job.

Once a model is downloaded it runs without a connection — the reason people use it for material that must not leave the building.
Model size
Models are downloaded separately from the program. Small ones take 2–5GB and mid-size ones 20–40GB, so check free disk space first.
Hardware
It runs on the CPU without a dedicated graphics card, but answers come slowly. With 8GB or more of video memory, small models reach usable speed.
After a reformat
Save the model files — they are gigabytes
Downloaded models live in %USERPROFILE%\.ollama\models. Copy that folder to another drive before formatting and you will not download them again. Put it back in the same place on the new install, or point the OLLAMA_MODELS environment variable at it.
For next time
Set OLLAMA_MODELS to a folder on D: and the models survive a reformat untouched.
