What it is

An open-source painting program developed by the KDE community. It is built for drawing rather than photo retouching, so brush response and pen pressure handling are strong, and it includes tools for comics and frame-by-frame animation. Free for personal and business use.

When to pick this

If you draw with a tablet. For retouching or compositing photographs, GIMP fits better.

Details

Brushes

Hundreds of brushes ship with it and you can build your own. Line weight responds to tablet pressure.

Comics and animation

Panel frames and frame-by-frame animation are built in, so short animated sequences need no other program.

Not for photo work

It is a drawing tool; GIMP is better for colour correction and photo compositing.

After a reformat

Back up the resources folder

Brushes, palettes and workspace layout live in %APPDATA%\krita. If you made or downloaded brushes, copy that folder before formatting or export a bundle from Settings → Manage Resources.

Tablet driver

A pen tablet needs the manufacturer’s driver installed first for pressure sensitivity. That is the driver’s job, not Krita’s.
