What it is
IrfanView is a fast image viewer. It is small, opens instantly, and moves through a folder of photos with the arrow keys quickly enough that it stays useful with very large collections. It also converts size and format across many files at once.
When to pick this
For browsing photos quickly or resizing many at once. If you need to read images inside archives without extracting, use Honeyview.
Details
Speed
Being a small program it appears the moment you click. The difference shows in folders with hundreds of photos.
Batch conversion
Change size, format and filenames for many images in one pass — useful before uploading photos to the web.
Business licence
Free for personal and educational use, but a paid licence is required at a company. People often install it at work assuming it is simply free.
After a reformat
Install the plugins separately
The program and its plugin pack are separate downloads. To open RAW, PSD, video and the like, reinstall the plugin pack too.
File associations and licensing
Setup asks which image formats to associate. Free for personal and educational use but licensed for business, so on a work PC use Honeyview or the Windows Photos app.
