What it is

GIMP is an open-source image editor for photo retouching and compositing. It covers most of the concepts you know from Photoshop — layers, masks, colour correction, brushes — which is why it is widely used as a replacement for paid software. Free for personal and business use.

When to pick this

When you need Photoshop-level editing without the cost. For simple retouching and collages, PhotoScape is quicker; for drawing, Krita.

Details

Layers and masks

Stack images and hide parts to composite them. Because the original is untouched, changes stay reversible.

Supported formats

Opens psd and saves png, jpg, tiff and webp. Complex psd files may not reproduce every effect exactly.

Learning curve

With this much functionality, finding things takes time at first. It is overkill if you only need to crop a few photos and adjust brightness.
