What it is
A PC game platform run by Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite and Unreal Engine. It is best known for giving away a paid game free every week. Anything you claim stays on the account permanently and can be installed later.
When to pick this
For the weekly giveaways or for titles sold only here. If you want one central game library, Steam is the hub.
Details
Weekly giveaways
A game is free during a set window each week. Claiming it within the window is enough; you can install it any time afterwards.
Compared with Steam
Steam has more games and stronger community features. Some titles, though, are exclusive here or cheaper.
Background startup
By default it starts with Windows. If you use it rarely, removing it from startup makes booting faster.
After a reformat
Restoring a game folder has an order
To reuse a backed-up game folder: click Install in the launcher, choose the same path, and once the download starts cancel → copy the files in → resume. The launcher verifies and fetches only what is missing.
Two-factor authentication
With 2FA on the account, a code is needed on the new PC. Saves vary by game; check whether each supports Epic cloud saves.
