What it is
An audio editor that has been in development since 1993. It records, edits, converts formats, removes noise and analyses frequency — most of what working with sound requires. It is not free software: you try the evaluation version and then buy.
When to pick this
Worth the money if you are restoring old recordings or need fine control over noise. For trimming a recording or changing formats, Audacity does the job, is open source, and stays free at work.
Details
Noise removal and restoration are the strengths
Hiss, clicks and mains hum from transferred cassettes and LPs are handled separately rather than in one pass. You can work on a selected region while watching the waveform, which avoids the smearing that comes from applying a filter to the whole file.
