What it is
An open-source program for recording and editing audio. Recording from a microphone, cutting and joining, reducing noise and exporting to mp3 are all free. It is widely used for podcasts, lecture recordings and cleaning up game-video narration without professional equipment.
When to pick this
For cleaning up voice recordings or light editing. To capture screen and sound together, use OBS Studio.
Details
Recording and editing
Record from a microphone or from what the PC is playing, and cut against the waveform. Multiple tracks let you handle voice and background music together.
Noise reduction
Select a silent stretch to profile the noise, then remove it across the whole recording — the usual fix for room hum or fan noise.
Export formats
Saves as wav, mp3, flac and others. Being open source, it costs nothing for personal or business use.
After a reformat
Settings and plugins
Settings are in %APPDATA%\audacity. Plugins you added (VST, Nyquist) are reinstalled. The defaults are fine for most people.
Project files
An .aup3 project holds its audio in the single file, so moving that file is enough.
