What it is
A music player by Peter Pawlowski. Its plain interface, small footprint and direct control over audio output have kept it in use for years among people who listen to a lot of music. The layout is built by the user, so two installations can look completely different.
When to pick this
If you own your music files and want something light with fine control. If you want it to work immediately with no setup, VLC plays audio too.

Light
Small install size and low memory use. Leaving music playing while you work costs almost nothing.
Audio output settings
Output mode (WASAPI, ASIO) and resampling can be chosen directly — relevant with an external DAC or high-resolution files.
Interface
The default layout is spartan. You can build the interface you want, but it takes effort up front.
After a reformat
Back up the settings folder
Playlists, layout and component settings live in %APPDATA%\foobar2000-v2. Copy it before formatting and the whole thing comes back. The media library rebuilds once you point it at your music folder again.
Reinstall components
Components you added need reinstalling. Restoring the settings folder does not always include the component files themselves.
